Traveller and Gypsy Awareness Training
Gypsies and Travellers have their own culture and traditions with some groups such as Romany and Irish Travellers retaining their own unique languages. An understanding of these distinct cultures is essential in order to improve access and effectiveness of health, education, accommodation and related services.
This training has been designed to put across the Traveller and Gypsy’s point of view and the examples given reflect actual custom & traditions, manner and way of life to statutory agencies, organisations and groups who come into contact with the community.
The training consists of:
Traveller Culture
- Languages (Cant & Gamin)
- Marriage customs & courting rituals (also damage of Big Fat Gypsy Weddings)
- Different cultural groupings (Cant speakers & Gamin Speakers)
- Strict cleanliness codes
- Strict moral codes
- Burning of homes/possessions
- Nomadism
- Strong family units
Differences between Romany Gypsies & Irish Travellers
- Irish Romanies
- English & Welsh Romanies
- European groupings
Racism, discrimination and Issues such as education, health, accommodation.
